The N17 Carrownurlaur Road Improvement Scheme is located between the villages of Ballindine and Milltown. The section was deficient is terms of horizontal geometry, carriageway width, sight distance at junctions and also in terms of the irregular vertical profile of the carriageway. This section had a poor accident history with five fatalities in two separate accidents in 2009.
The scheme involved widening and realignment to Standard Single Carriageway, (7.3m Carriageway with hard shoulders). This project significantly improves safety for road users.
The length of the section is approximately 1.4km and the current AADT is approximately 7,300.
